Government's Reckless Operation in Basti Raises Concerns

In a Basti settlement where residents have been living for decades, the government's deployment of armed forces and bulldozers without adequate planning or sustainable solutions has raised significant alarm. This aggressive action not only undermines principles of democracy and federalism but also puts vulnerable families at risk of displacement and social injustice. The lack of proper information, preparation, and both temporary and permanent management measures has left the impoverished community in turmoil. By disregarding principles of governance such as participation, integrity, minority rights, appropriate use of power, respect for human rights, transparency, rule of law, and accountability, the government's actions have failed to uphold the very foundations of a just society. The concern now deepens as this government's approach of rendering Basti residents homeless raises doubts about the sustainability of governance and the lengths to which it will go for its own agenda. The use of illegal tactics and heavy machinery in a settlement that has been legally inhabited for 53 years is a blatant violation of human rights and societal ethics. The historical Basti settlement, which has housed residents for over 53 years, along with newer settlements established over the past 25 years, each hold unique foundations and evidence of community existence. The government's attempt to label residents as non-Sukumbasi by spreading misleading information and failing to recognize the evidence of Sukumbasi families within these settlements showcases the government's oppressive tactics. The aspirations of the Sukumbasi community to obtain rights after years of struggling have been shattered as two individuals have tragically resorted to suicide due to the government's failure to provide security for their families. While local, provincial, and federal authorities have previously focused on identification, service provision, and budget allocation in these settlements, the recent use of illegal bulldozers and questionable practices by the government have disrupted the lives of nearly 3,500 households across approximately 18 Basti settlements within a span of two weeks. The government's complete lack of preparation for displacing families has led to chaos and distress in the Sukumbasi community. The government's use of unlawful tactics and machinery in managing Basti settlements showcases a disregard for legal processes and ethical governance practices.
