Chief Justice Sharma Sworn in by President, Ready to Assume Duties
Today, in a positive development, Chief Justice Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma has been sworn in after receiving approval from parliamentary hearings. The oath was administered by President Ramchandra Poudel, marking the official commencement of his role. Dr. Sharma, who was recommended for the position by the Constitutional Council, is set to assume his duties imminently, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the judiciary. The decision to appoint him as Chief Justice was made by the Constitutional Council, positioning him as the fourth in line at the Supreme Court. This appointment not only upholds the tradition of seniority but also reflects a commitment to judicial independence and transparency. Despite some opposition voiced by legal bodies like the Nepal Bar Association, the appointment signals a positive transition and a step towards a more robust judiciary. Dr. Sapana Pradhan Malla, the outgoing Chief Justice, had expressed aspirations to see Dr. Sharma succeed her, a wish that has now been fulfilled. The government facilitated a smooth transition by issuing necessary ordinances and creating a conducive environment for approvals. The Constitutional Council, with the provision allowing decisions by a minimum of three members, eventually reached a consensus to recommend Dr. Sharma for the position. The recommendation faced dissent from two council members, but ultimately, Dr. Sharma's appointment was approved, marking a significant milestone in the judiciary's evolution.
