Price Increase Seen in Rice and Lentils in Baisakh, Vegetables up to 334% More Expensive

In a recent report released by the Ministry of Industry, Supplies, and Consumer Protection, it was noted that the prices of rice and lentils have increased in Baisakh compared to the previous month, Chait. Factors such as inflation in raw materials, impact of the Indian market, and increased transportation costs have contributed to the rise in food prices. During the month of Baisakh, a significant fluctuation in the prices of green vegetables has been observed, with some seasonal vegetables experiencing a price increase of up to 334%. Prices of various vegetables like onions, bottle gourds, long beans, green leafy vegetables, and hybrid cucumbers have also surged by significant percentages. While prices of certain items like potatoes (red), radishes, tofu, and tamarind have remained stable throughout Baisakh, the price of eggs has seen an increase. Additionally, there has been a noticeable fluctuation in the prices of fruits, with a general upward trend in prices of fruits like apples, pomegranates, and oranges. The abnormal price hike in the market is attributed to the strength of the dollar in the international market and the rising prices of petroleum products. As of Baisakh 2, the price of petrol had reached Rs 219 per liter and diesel Rs 237 per liter. Despite a slight decrease on Baisakh 17 with petrol at Rs 217 and diesel at Rs 225 per liter, overall transportation costs have remained high.
