China Provides Generous Grant for Araniko Highway Reconstruction, Promising a Bright Future

Nepal's Cabinet meeting on Tuesday made a decisive move to accept a grant of 79.36 million RMB (more than 1.8 billion NPR) from the Chinese government for the reconstruction and improvement of the Araniko Highway. This funding will facilitate the repair of a 200-meter-long section that has been a major obstacle on the highway, with an official from the Department of Roads indicating that the project will now be implemented in collaboration with Chinese support. Following the destructive earthquake of 2015, which caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure, the vital trade route between Nepal and China via Tatopani Pass has been severely affected, displacing over ten thousand people and posing risks to settlements in the area. However, the recent agreement between China and Nepal for the second phase expansion of Kathmandu's Ring Road, exceeding 12 billion NPR, has set a positive precedent for bilateral cooperation. The decision to accept China's grant for the reconstruction of the Araniko Highway signals a new chapter of collaboration between the two nations, with preparations underway for a joint project review and development assistance evaluation mechanism. A meeting of the mechanism, involving officials from both countries, is scheduled to take place early next month to streamline project implementation and enhance cooperation in infrastructure development. Efforts are being made to streamline the project implementation and facilitate coordination between Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chinese diplomats, and the project execution team. The upcoming meeting of the review mechanism is expected to kickstart the implementation process, paving the way for a strengthened partnership in infrastructure development between Nepal and China.
